Oncology and Hematology
Michael Epstein, MD

Dr. Epstein is a Board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist serving patients in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Dr. Epstein earned his medical degree from Rostov Medical Institute in the former USSR. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and his fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He treats patients with a wide variety of solid tumors and hematological malignancies, with a particular interest in lung and gastrointestinal cancers, including those of the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, and biliary tract.

Dr. Epstein chose oncology because of its profound impact on patients’ lives. As an oncologist, he strives to make a meaningful difference by pursuing a cure when possible and improving quality and duration of life when a cure isn’t achievable. He finds purpose in guiding patients through the challenges of a cancer diagnosis with empathy and support. Each patient’s case is carefully evaluated to ensure accurate diagnoses and the most effective, personalized care.

Dr Epstein appreciates working at Fort Wayne Medical and Oncology Hematology because it allows him to make a difference in people’s lives. He is inspired by the long-term relationships he forms with patients and their families. For Dr. Epstein, oncology isn’t just about the science; it’s about the human stories. He is motivated by moments of triumph, like when a patient once given three months to live due to metastatic lung cancer is still thriving two years later, traveling the world. Receiving photos of grandchildren’s weddings or new births – moments patients once thought they’d never experience—reinforces his commitment to the profession.

Since joining Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology in 2002, Dr. Epstein has witnessed rapid advancements in cancer care. He notes that new discoveries are made almost weekly, driving progress in the fight against cancer. Immunotherapy, in particular, is revolutionizing treatment by enabling patients’ immune systems to combat cancer. Combined with personalized therapies targeting specific molecular markers in tumors, oncology is shifting from a one-size-fits-all approach to tailored, individualized care. These innovations provide renewed hope and have made outcomes that were unimaginable just a few years ago a reality for many patients.
